McCartney: I'm Addicted To Songwriting And Performing

Paul McCartney told a small audience his addiction to songwriting and performing is the reason he is still continuing touring and writing songs. McCartney held an intimate Q&A with 10 lucky fans and their guests along with a select group of media in Perth, Australia on Thursday, Nov 30. 

It’s kind of a magical thing because when you write a song you’ve got nothing and you suddenly produce something like a rabbit from a hat and it feels really good and you get a bit addicted to that feeling. And then you perform it with an audience and you get addicted to that too. I love it so much and that is why I keep doing it and that’s what gives me the energy.

Although there might be more reasons. On the question of a young fan asking him how he kept his energy and passion, McCartney joked “sex and drugs”.
McCartney also revealed to the audience that he’d never expected that he’d still be playing stadium shows, sixty years after meeting John Lennon: “When we started off with the group we thought we might last 10 years if we were lucky”.

Asked to compare performing in the early days days to now at the age of 75, McCartney answered that it is like two different worlds, but that he still likes to be on stage:

It’s great in a different way. I’m older, the audience is older. Now I go to a show and there’s people your dad’s age, some people older, some people your age and your kid’s age, that’s a great feeling for us in the band. But it is a surprise really, because we didn’t realise it was going to last this long.”

The exclusive Q&A session was followed by a short performance of Drive My Car, Lady Madonna, I’ve Just Seen a Face and Wings’ track Junior’s Farm.

The rock legend appears in Australia for the first time in 24 years, where he will give six concerts starting in Perth, next Saturday Dec 2. The Australian leg of the One-One-One tour ends with a gig in Auckland, New-Zealand on Dec 16. McCartney's last tour of Australia and New Zealand was in 1993 as part of The New World Tour.
